לפני שאני יורד לעומק הדיון בטיעונים לזכותנו על ארצנו, אומר דבר שתמיד הפליא אותי והוא העיסוק התדיר בשאלת הצידוקים שאנו נותנים להיותנו חיים בארץ, הצידוקים שאנו מחפשים לזהותנו. במובן זה אנו חריגים בנוף העולמי. אני לא רואה צרפתי, אמריקאי או עיראקי שקמים בבוקר ותוהים לגבי זכותם על ארצם או מחטטים בזהותם. זאת על אחת כמה וכמה כאשר מדובר באחד העמים העתיקים, בעל תרבות יוצאת דופן. אני מזהה בכך מעין פתולוגיה יהודית הצריכה כל העת את אישורו של האחר להצדקת קיומה ואולי זה מה שעושה אותנו כל כך מיוחדים. כל הגמרא מבוססת על מוטיב הווכחנות, השאלה והתשובה. תמיד דימיתי את היהודים בתור הילד החנון של השכונה העולמית, כולם פחות או יותר מקנאים בו, קל להטיח בו האשמות שווא, כיף להתעלל בו ואילו הוא – מתבודד לו בפינה, כולו זעוף ומלא תחנונים ועוד טוען שהוא הנבחר מכולם. ואולי ברובד העמוק של הדחף שלנו לחפש את הצידוקים להיותנו כאן, מסתתר הארכיטיפ של התודעה היהודית הכללית הקורא לנו ‘להיות אור לגויים’, כדי לבסס את היותנו ‘העם הנבחר’. אולי משום כך בוחנים אותנו כל הזמן ומציבים לנו קריטריונים מוסריים שאף אומה לא הייתה עומדת.

בזה אילו היא הייתה נמצאת באותם תנאים?!

הזכות שלי על ארצי דומה לאותו אחד שעומד בתור למשרד הפנים ומבקש אזרחות. מגיע פקיד מרושע ומעיף אותו מהתור לאיזה אלפיים שנה. ואז הוא חוזר לתור ומתברר שאת הפקיד המרושע כבר מזמן העיפו. בינתיים כבר עקפו אותו בתור הרומאים, הסולג’וקים, הממלוכים, הצלבנים, הטורקים, והבריטים. ועכשיו הפלשתינאים פתאום נזכרו שהם בעצם עם. ואילו היהודי עומד חסר אונים בין הפטיש של הגרמנים לסדן של הערבים ומנופף עם המספר 70 לספירה שעוד הספיק לקחת כשהיה פה בפעם הראשונה. ומה עושים? כל אחד רוצה טריטוריה להגדרה עצמית. אז מגיע הסניגור הדתי וטוען שאלוהים הבטיח לו את הארץ, ולראייה הוא מוציא את ספרו שם הוא מוכיח את הדבר. הקטגור לא נשאר חייב – ושולף גם הוא ספר שטוען שגם לו אלוהים הבטיח את הארץ . בקיצור לא הולך.

מגיע דוד. ב. גוריון ושולף את הטיעון ההיסטורי ולשם כך משתמש במשל הבית: “הייתי אומר ככה: זהו מעשה במשפחה שבנתה בית גדול בן חמישים חדרים וישבה בו. בא אויב ונישל אותה בכוח, עקר אותה מביתה, והמשפחה נתפזרה. הבית עבר מיד ליד כמה וכמה פעמים, נהרס במידה רבה, מתוך הזנחה ומריבות. לבסוף חזרו כמה מבני המשפחה ומצאו חמישה חדרים תפוסים על ידי אחרים, ושאר החדרים הרוסים ומוזנחים ולא יסכנו לדירת אנשים. בני המשפחה אמרו לדיירים: אין אנו רוצים לגרש אתכם, הישארו בחדרים שתפסתם, אנחנו נתיישב בחדרים העזובים, נתקן אותם ונכשירם לשיכון . המשפחה התיישבה בכמה חדרים. והנה  באו בני משפחה נוספים וגם הם רצו לתקן כמה חדרים עזובים ולשבת בהם, ואז אומרים פתאום הדיירים: לא, אין אנו רוצים בשכנים נוספים, החדרים הריקים, אין אנו גרים בהם, ואין אנו רוצים שאתם תגורו בהם ושאתם תתקנו אותם, הבית הוא ביתנו. גם עתה בני המשפחה אינם אומרים לזרים: “תצאו אתם זהו ביתנו”. הם אומרים: “השארו במקומכם, אם כי אתם פה רק מתמול שלשום, אנו אפילו מוכנים לסייע לכם לתיקון חדריכם – אם תרצו בכך. אבל אנה אל תפריעו לנו להשתכן ולהתיישב  בכל אותם חדרים שאנו נציל מהרס ועזובה. ואם כי בשכנות המקום יש בתים גדולים ריקים למחצה, והם שייכים למשפחות הדיירים הזרים, ואין אנו אומרים לדיירים אלא, “תעברו לאחד הבתים ההם”. אנו אומרים להם: “השארו במקומכם, ואנחנו נתיישב בחדרים של ביתנו אנו, ונהיה שכנים טובים”.

ואם הטיעון ההיסטורי נראה לכם קצת ארכאי, כי מה אשמים הפלסטינים בכך שהרומאים סילקו אותנו מכאן. מגיע עמוס עוז ושולף את הטיעון המוסרי בדבר זכותנו על ארצנו. ואת זה הוא מתאר איך לא – במשל: “השתמשתי במשל הקרש והטובע להסביר את צדקת הציונות. גזרתי על עצמי הפרדה חמורה בין מניעיה הפנימיים של שיבת ציון ובין צידוקה כלפי הזולת (ההדגשה היא במקור). הזכרון, הקשר ההיסטורי, הגעגועים, הרדיפות והכמיהה הם מניעי שיבת ציון. צידוקה כלפי הערבים יושבי הארץ הוא צדקת הטובע הנאחז בקרש היחיד שהוא מסוגל להיאחז בו (למה דווקא בקרש זה? כאן הסבר כולו שייך לתחום המניעים: לשום מקום אחר לא היו היהודים באים כך, לחדש את עצמאותם ולהיות לעם). והטובע הנאחז בקרש זכאי, על פי כללי הצדק הטבעי, האובייקטיבי, האוניברסלי, לפנות לו מקום על הקרש, גם אם לשם כך עליו להזיז הצידה את יושביו. גם אם יושבי הקרש מאלצים אותו לעשות זאת בכוח. אבל אין לו זכות טבעית להדוף המימה את יושביו האחרים של הקרש. והוא ההבדל המוסרי שבין  ‘יהוד’ יפו ורמלה ובין ‘יהוד’ שכם ורמאללה. והוא הצידוק המוסרי של חלוקת הארץ בין שני עמיה”.

ואם גם זה לא מספק את התביעה, אז ניתן להוסיף את הטיעון המעשי – כפי שמובא על ידי פרופ’ רות גביזון: “עליית היהודים לארץ ישראל שונה מתופעות קולוניאליסטיות, הן מבחינת מעמדם בארצות המוצא והן מבחינת זיקתם לארץ ישראל: היהודים החיו בגלות: הם היו זרים במקומות רבים סבלו מרדיפות קשות: והמקום היחיד בעולם שבו נהנו אי פעם מריבונות מדינית היה ארץ ישראל. ודאי שחירותם לעשות זאת הייתה גדולה יותר מחירותם של האנגלים והספרדים שכבשו את יבשת אמריקה. לקיומה ולחוסנה של ישראל יש השלכות חשובות על מצבם של היהודים בארץ ובעולם. יש לזכור כי הציונות הופיעה כמענה לשתי בעיות מובחנות אך קשורות זו בזו: מצוקת הרדיפה והפוגרומים מאידך גיסא. ותופעת ההתבוללות והיטשטשות הזהות היהודית מאידך גיסא. היחס בין שתי הבעיות הללו מורכב. רדיפות קשות יוצרות תמריץ להתבוללות, אבל גם מקשות עליה. דווקא במצב של ביטחון פיזי יחסי ושגשוג, נעשית ההתבוללות אפשרית ואף מושכת. מצד שני, במקרים רבים ההחלטה להיטמע ולהשתלב החברה זרה לא פטרה את היהודים משנאה אנטישמית: לעיתים היא דווקא שימשה לה תמריץ מעורר. ישראל מעניקה ליהודים החיים בה אפשרות לקיים חיים יהודיים מלאים יותר מאשר בתפוצות, במיוחד ליהודי החילוני. משום שהיא המקום היחיד שבו אין הוא בחזקת מיעוט. התרבות הציבורית של המדינה היא יהודית – עברית. שפת המדינה היא עברית. החגים הלאומיים והשיח הציבורי קשורים קשר בל יינתק להיסטוריה ולגורל היהודיים. ליהודים יש שליטה על אדמות המדינה, ועל ההגירה ממנה ואליה ועל ההגנה על האוכלוסייה האזרחית שלה. אפשר לומר שהדרישה מן העם היהודי לוותר על מדינתו פירושה תביעה להתאבדות לאומית”.

ולסיכום ניתן לומר שליהודים החוזרים לארצם יש זכות להתיישב כאן זאת על פי התנ”ך למי שמאמין, זכותנו כאן מעוגנת באלפי שנות היסטוריה ארכיאולוגית, ולא לשכוח שתמיד התקיימה כאן התיישבות של יהודים. הזכות שלנו נובעת הן מטיעונים מוסריים שזהו המפלט היחיד ליהודי מפני זוועות השנאה. כי זהו המקום היחיד שבו הוא יכול להגן על עצמו מבלי לסמוך על אחרים.

Edolphus Towns and Congressman Anthony Weiner announced today that they are

circulating a letter in the House of Representatives, seeking other Members to

join them in asking President Obama to extend clemency to Jonathan Pollard, the

Dear Mr. President,

We write to urge you to use your constitutional power to extend clemency to

Jonathan Pollard, thereby releasing him from prison after the time he has

already served. As you know, such an exercise of the clemency power does not in

any way imply doubt about his guilt, nor cast any aspersions on the process by

which he was convicted. Those who have such views are of course entitled to

continue to have them, but the clemency grant has nothing to do with that.

We believe that there has been a great disparity from the standpoint of justice

between the amount of time Mr. Pollard has served and the time that has been

served – or not served at all – by many others who were found guilty of similar

activity on behalf of nations adversarial to us, unlike Israel.

Recently, we allowed a large number of Russians, who had been spying on us for

the country that had long been our major adversary, to leave with no punishment

whatsoever. This makes it very hard for many to understand why Mr. Pollard

should continue to serve beyond the nearly twenty-five years he has already been

in prison. We agree that it is important that we establish the principle that

espionage of any sort is impermissible, but it is indisputable in our view that

the nearly twenty-five years that Mr. Pollard has served stands as a sufficient

time from the standpoint of either punishment or deterrence.

We further believe that at a time when Israel, our democratic ally, is being

faced with difficult decisions, a decision by you to grant clemency would not

only be a humane act regarding Mr. Pollard, but it would also be taken in Israel

as a further affirmation of the strong commitment the U.S. has to the ties

between us, and we believe that such an affirmation could be especially useful

at a time when those decisions are being made.

In summary, we see clemency for Mr. Pollard as an act of compassion justified by

the way others have been treated by our justice system; as an act that will do

nothing whatsoever to lessen our defenses against espionage; and a step that far

from hurting the national security, could advance it by the impact it would have

within Israel. We urge you to use the clemency power in this case.

A secret 36-page memo based on Obama administration statements indicates that the president warned Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas to start direct talks with Israel or risk losing American support for the recognition of the PA as a country. The Associated Press reported it has possession of the document, under the letterhead of the Palestinian Negotiations Department and which indicates the warning came from President Barack Obama via U.S. Middle East envoy George Mitchell.

It shows that the Obama administration has resigned itself to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu remaining head of Israel’s coalition government. “Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu is not in political danger of being replaced,” the document states. It adds that Abbas is under pressure from both the Arab world and within the PA, whereby his consent to direct talks with Israel would be “political suicide” for him. However, the document warns, “Abbas needs to accept direct talks now if he wants President Obama’s help in facilitating statehood.” The memo says that PA advisors are in favor of rejecting the American ultimatum.

 Abbas told PA media on Sunday that he is resisting pressure from “the entire world” to concede his long-stated condition that Netanyahu extend the 10-month building freeze that expires in late September. Senior Cabinet ministers as well as the Prime Minister have clearly stated they will not extend the freeze. Political support for the coalition is strong, with even the center-left Israeli media generally recognizing that the PA keeps adding on new condition for direct talks. Abbas has in effect insisted on acceptance of a proposed PA state without negotiations on any substantial issues, such as the status of Jerusalem. Prime Minister Netanyahu and Abbas have been blaming each other for the failure to sit down for direct talks.

 “We have negotiated with Israeli governments before, more than once. Why would we avoid such talks? We are not,” Abbas told reporters after discussions with King Abdullah in Jordan. Prime Minister Netanyahu repeated on Monday his oft-stated declaration that he is ready meet Abbas immediately without pre-conditions. “We have an understanding with the Americans that we need to move now, without any delay, to direct negotiations, but in response, we have a clear Palestinian attempt to avoid this process,” Netanyahu said. “They are trying to stall and to sneak away from direct negotiations and to cause the Arab League to shackle the talks.

” The secret memo from Washington indicates clearly that President Obama has given up on pressing Israel for any more concessions, which Jerusalem has made on a regular basis since the Roadmap Plan was announced by former U.S. President George W. Bush in 2002. The memo puts the Palestinian Authority in the unaccustomed position of having to compromise or “going for broke” by continuing its previously announced strategy of waiting for the United States to declare the PA as a new Arab country within Israel’s borders. State Department officials would not confirm the exact language of the memo, but said, “This indeed illustrates where we are.” PA negotiator Saeb Erekat said the memo is not entirely accurate, but confirmed that American officials told Abbas that he has to sit down with Israel “if he wants Obama to help.”

מדוע אני מתאבל בתשעה באב?

אני מתאבל ב- ט’ באב ממש מאותן סיבות, שאני חוגג את יום העצמאות.

ט’ באב הינו היפוכו של יום העצמאות. ביום זה איבדנו את עצמאותנו ובשני זכינו בה מחדש. איני יכול להבין את אלה שחוגגים את יום העצמאות, אבל נמנעים מלהתאבל בתשעה באב, “כיוון שזה שייך לדתיים”, ולהיפך, כיצד ניתן להתאבל בט’ באב ולא לחגוג את שיבת עם ישראל לארצו?

ט’ באב הינו אבל לאומי ולא דתי, כיוון שביום זה, איבדנו את עצמאותנו המדינית, ביום זה הוגלה עם ישראל מארצו. מאז יום זה, במשך כאלפיים שנה, היה עמנו למרמס בכל ארצות פיזוריו. כל הרציחות והפוגרומים באו עלינו בעקבות האסון ב- ט’ באב. השואה הינה גם תוצאה ישירה, של האירוע ביום מר זה.

אלמלא הוגלינו מארצנו, היינו היום מעצמה בת עשרות מיליוני יהודים, כך שגם מלחמותינו היום לקיום המדינה ואלפי חיילי צה”ל שנפלו בקרבות לתקומת ישראל הינם תוצאה ישירה, של אירועי ט’ באב.

ט’ באב הוא אבל לאומי, כתוצאה מאירוע היסטורי, ואינו קשור לאמונה באל או בתורת ישראל. כל אדם שחש עצמו יהודי, ואפילו הוא אתיאיסט, צריך לחוש צורך להתאבל ביום מר זה.

1.  Why not let the flotilla pass through to Gaza?
Because sovereign countries have rights to blockade countries/areas that are perceived as a threat to its citizens and territory.
Any foreign element that would try to break that blockade would rightfully be prevented to reach the blockaded territory. (see below)
What actually is Gaza? It is a territory controlled by Hamas – an organization internationally recognized as a terrorist body and banned by the Western World. They have launched hundreds of missiles against Israeli civilian population, used their own population as human shields, killed Palestinians in Gaza because they belong to the wrong camp – in short the western dream of a ‘liberal democracy’. What does that say about their human rights record, about their value for human life? Or should they be commended for being good in “talking the Western talk” because they now that there are those who are ready to listen?
The fact is that there is no famine or humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The area is under the control of Hamas, a terrorist organization that has declared its aim to destroy Israel and countinues to arm itself with weapons and rockets for this purpose; it has attacked Israeli civilians shamelessly and continues to hold captive an Israeli soldier, in contravention of international law. Accordingly, Israel stands on its natural right to inspect all cargo entering Gaza.
So, let us ask again, why let the flotilla pass through to Gaza?

2.  What was the purpose of the flotilla?
The entire flotilla was designed as a media stunt and political provocation by elements that are hostile to Israel, primarily the IHH – a violent, extremist group which supports terrorist organizations under the guise of humanitarian activity.  IHH history of support for terrorism
Prior to departure, the ‘peace activists’ sing about killing Jews
The Israeli Navy addresses a ship nearing the Gaza shore, offering it to dock at the Ashdod Port and transfer its supplies under the ship’s crew’s supervision. The ship refused to comply.
The Flotilla organizers not only rejected this offer, but stated clearly that (and I quote) “this mission is not about delivering Humanitarian supply, but rather about breaking the Israeli siege “as Greta Berlin, a flotilla spokesperson told the media last week.  
What kind of Humanitarian activists demand to bypass the United Nations, the Red Cross, and other internationally recognized agencies?
What kind of peace activists use knives, clubs and other weapons to attack soldiers who board a ship in accordance with international law?
What kind of Humanitarian activists, some with known terrorist history, embrace Hamas, a terrorist organization that openly shuns a two state solution and calls for Israel destruction, defying conditions set by the international community and the Quartet. The answer is clear: they are not peace activists; they are not messengers of good will. They cynically use a humanitarian platform to send a message of hate and to implement violence.  (taken from the Israel’s UN address)
3.  Why was the operation in international waters?
Any concerns about the legal aspects of the operation? Actually there is nothing that prevents the operation being in international waters.

4.  Why were there casualties?
Passengers on one of the six boats initiated violent clashes
Israel regrets the loss of human lives, but responsibility lies with the organizers and participants of the flotilla who initiated the violence.
While boarding on of the vessels, IDF soldiers were physically attacked with live ammunition and other weapons, including knives and clubs, which had been prepared in advance.  A weapon belonging to one of soldiers was snatched and, apparently, fired on IDF forces.
During the course of the incident, when their lives were put in danger, IDF soldiers were compelled to employ means to disperse demonstrations, including live weapons.

5.  Why will Israel always lose the blame game?
Because Israel is seen as the powerful state in the region, even though it is a tiny piece of land surrounded by countless enemies.
Because the story of suffering is always a good story, especially if it can be depicted as one which is wrongfully so
Because it is good for the consciousness of many (unfortunately) around the world and clears them of their own guilt from the past
Because it acts as a responsible sovereign state and not a guerilla organization
Because there is freedom of press, freedom of expression, and democracy in Israel; it is not an authoritarian rule which dictates what should and what should not be allowed to be aired.
Because Israel does not cynically use the press in conveying unfounded ‘truths’
Because who wants to portray the Palestinians as the aggressors and take on the whole Muslim world?
So, it is not always that people do not know the truth,  sometimes it is more convenient not to know the truth.

Israel, on its end, will continue to express its desire for peace and extend its hand to all those who are willing to engage. This however, does not mean that it is ready to commit political and military suicide in order to satisfy the wishes the Hamas regime in Gaza.

I attended a lecture tonight by Jacques Gauthier, a Canadian Lawyer who just received his PhD after twenty years of research on the legal status of Jerusalem and the writing of a dissertation of some 1300 pages with 3000 footnotes. He had to present his thesis to a panel of two leading international lawyers and one world famous Jewish historian. The reason for so many footnotes was to enable him to defend his thesis from intense attack by one of the lawyers who happened to be Jewish anti-Zionist and who had represented the PA on numerous occasions. Gauthier is not Jewish.

Here’s what he said in point form,

1. The Balfour Declaration of 1917 started the whole process but it didn’t create international legal rights.

2. The San Remo decision made on 25 April 1920, incorporated the Balfour Declaration of 1917[2] and Article 22 of the Covenant of the League of Nations. It was the basic decision upon which the Mandate for Palestine was constructed. While the decision made at San Remo created the Palestine Mandate de-facto, the mandate document signed by Great Britain as the Mandatory and the League of Nations made it de-jure. It thus became a binding treaty in international law.

The High Contracting Parties agree to entrust, by application of the provisions of Article 22, the administration of Palestine, within such boundaries as may be determined by the Principal Allied Powers, to a Mandatory, to be selected by the said Powers. The Mandatory will be responsible for putting into effect the declaration originally made on November 8, 1917, by the British Government, and adopted by the other Allied Powers, in favour of the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country.

He pointed out that the Arabs weren’t even mentioned but that civil and religious rights only were accorded other inhabitants . This thereby excludes political rights.

3. Article 22 of the Covenant of the League of Nations provides for the creation of mandates.

To those colonies and territories which as a consequence of the late war have ceased to be under the sovereignty of the States which formerly governed them and which are inhabited by peoples not yet able to stand by themselves under the strenuous conditions of the modern world, there should be applied the principle that the well-being and development of such peoples form a sacred trust of civilisation and that securities for the performance of this trust should be embodied in this Covenant.

The legal significance here is that “the well-being and development of such peoples form a sacred trust of civilisation”. The Mandatory Power was the trustee of that trust.

4 The Palestine Mandate of the League of Nations, included the following significant recital,

“Whereas recognition has thereby been given to the historical connection of the Jewish people with Palestine and to the grounds for reconstituting their national home in that country;

This had never happened before in history. Palestine was to be held for the Jewish people wherever they lived. No such recognition had ever been according to anyone else, anywhere, ever.

ART. 2. The Mandatory shall be responsible for placing the country under such political, administrative and economic conditions as will secure the establishment of the Jewish national home, as laid down in the preamble, and the development of self-governing institutions, and also for safeguarding the civil and religious rights of all the inhabitants of Palestine, irrespective of race and religion.

Thus the operative clause specifically referred to the preamble and reiterated that there were no political rights for other inhabitants.

ART. 5. The Mandatory shall be responsible for seeing that no Palestine territory shall be ceded or leased to, or in any way placed under the control of the Government of any foreign Power.

ART. 6. The Administration of Palestine, while ensuring that the rights and position of other sections of the population are not prejudiced, shall facilitate Jewish immigration under suitable conditions and shall encourage, in co-operation with the Jewish agency referred to in Article 4, close settlement by Jews on the land, including State lands and waste lands not required for public purposes.

5. The United Nations took over from the failed League of Nations in 1945 and its Charter included

Article: 80 .. nothing in this Chapter shall be construed in or of itself to alter in any manner the rights whatsoever of any states or any peoples or the terms of existing international instruments to which Members of the United Nations may respectively be parties.

Thus the Palestine Mandate continued without change.

6. In 1947, the General Assembly of the UN passed Res 181 which became known as the Partition Plan pursuant to which both Jews and Arabs could announce their state.

First it must be noted that the Charter of the UN specifically gave no power to the General Assembly because that would infringe on the sovereign power of individual members. So the GA could recommend only. Secondly, this recommendation was in violation of the terms of the Mandate. See Art 5 above.

This resolution also provided for a Special Regime for Jerusalem which had the following defined boundaries,

A. SPECIAL REGIME The City of Jerusalem shall be established as a corpus separatum under a special international regime and shall be administered by the United Nations. The Trusteeship Council shall be designated to discharge the responsibilities of the Administering Authority on behalf of the United Nations.

B. BOUNDARIES OF THE CITY The City of Jerusalem shall include the present municipality of Jerusalem plus the surrounding villages and towns, the most eastern of which shall be Abu Dis; the most southern, Bethlehem; the most western, ‘Ein Karim (including also the built-up area of Motsa); and the most northern Shu’fat, as indicated on the attached sketch-map (annex B).

But this regime was to be limited in time. It was not to be an “international city ” for all time as we have been lead to believe.

The Statute elaborated by the Trusteeship Council the

aforementioned principles shall come into force not later than 1 October 1948. It shall remain in force in the first instance for a period of ten years, unless the Trusteeship Council finds it necessary to undertake a re-examination of these provisions at an earlier date. After the expiration of this period the whole scheme shall be subject to examination by the Trusteeship Council in the light of experience acquired with its functioning. The residents the City shall be then free to express by means of a referendum their wishes as to possible modifications of regime of the City.

This provision for a referendum was of critical importance to the acceptance of Res 181 by Ben Gurion. He knew that the Jews were in a majority within these boundaries and would be in 10 years when the referendum was to be held. Thus he was confidant that Jerusalem would return to Jewish hands.

Keep in mind that the disposition of this area was to be determined not by Israel but by the residents of Jerusalem so defined. Currently the Jews have a 2:1 majority there.

Needless to say that after the Armistice Agreement of ‘49 the Jordanians who were in control of Jerusalem violated every provision of this resolution calling for among other things respect for holy places. The referendum never took place.

After the ‘67 war in which Israel regained the land to the Jordan including Jerusalem, Res 242 of the Security Council was passed authorizing Israel to remain in possession of all the land until they had “secure and recognized boundaries”. It did not require Israel to withdraw from all of the territories and it was silent on Jerusalem.

Also it “Affirms further the necessity for achieving a just settlement of the refugee problem”. There was no reference to Res 181 nor was there a distinction made between Jewish and Arab refugees.

Based on this, I suggest that,

Not only should Israel be demanding that the referendum be held now, Jerusalem should be the first order of business. Olmert is sloughing us off by saying “Jerusalem is not on the table yet”.

He should demand that the referendum take place before the balance of the land is negotiated. If the Arabs won’t agree to the referendum there is nothing to talk about.

Obviously, Olmert isn’t going to ask for a referendum or insist that Jerusalem not be divided.

In closing I would like to stress one more thing.

By virtue of this preamble

“Whereas recognition has thereby been given to the historical connection of the Jewish people with Palestine and to the grounds for reconstituting their national home in that country;

in the mandate, the United Nations, the League’s successor, has recognized the Jewish historical rights to reconstitute their national home in Palestine. That’s Zionism. “Zion” is Jerusalem.

Thus the UN has recognized Jerusalem as the home of the Jewish people.

חשיבות עליונה ביצירת פורומים פרו-ישראליים

הדיון אודות תפקידה של התקשורת ותפקידם של הצעירים בשיווק ציוני, התרחש עם סיום דבריו של אלדד בק.
בק, שלא מכבר הוציא לאור את ספרו “מעבר לגבול” גלל בהרצאתו את תיאור המציאות הסבוכה ואת חוויותיו במדינות מוסלמיות רבות בהן סוריה, לבנון, עיראק, איראן, פקיסטן ואפגניסטן. הוא הדגיש כי לצעירים חשיבות רבה בהוצאת האמת לאור, בכתיבה ובשיווק אינטנסיבי, ביצירת קשר עם משרדי ממשלה ובהבאת המציאות האמיתית לקורא. הוא קרא לארגוני צעירים לקחת חלק בפעילויות מיוחדות של הסברה, בדיוק כמו שאנשי השמאל משכילים לעשות וזוכים לתמיכה ציבורית, על אף היותם מיעוט שבמיעוט.

עם סיום דבריו של בק והדיון המרתק, נערכה הרמת כוסית לבאי הכנס לכבוד חג הפסח, חג החירות. “התחלנו פעילות מחודשת לצעירי הליכוד בתקופה האחרונה שרק גדלה ומתפתחת. בימים אלו, בהם ראש הממשלה עומד איתן תחת התקפות חוזרות ונשנות, אנו מחזקים מכאן את ידיו ומברכים אותו:
“לשנה הבאה בירושלים הבנויה”.
